Pet vaccines are divided into two broad categories: Core and non-core. Core vaccines are recommended for nearly all cats and protect against common illnesses. Non-core vaccines, on the other hand, are only required by certain cats. Whether your cat goes outside or stays outside plays a vital role in determining their vaccine needs.
For cats, core vaccines include:
- Rabies (required by law)
- Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis
- Calicivirus
- Panleukopenia
The feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia vaccines are typically administered using the combination FVRCP vaccine. At The Cat Clinic, we use an intranasal vaccine rather than a shot. With this vaccine, a drop is administered in each nostril rather than being injected into your cat’s body using a syringe.
Non-core vaccines for cats include:
- Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLv)
